Who Are The Sons Of The
American Legion?
The Sons of the American Legion is a patriotic service
organization formed on September 12–15, 1932. The S.A.L. is
made up of male descendants of people who served in the
United States Armed Forces during times specified by the
American Legion. The Sons of the American Legion's mission to
serve veterans, the military and their families is carried out
through its hundreds of outreach programs delivered by its
members, volunteers and national headquarters. The Sons of
the American Legion's national headquarters is located in
Indianapolis. Our local squadron is hosted by the American
Legion, South Houston Post 490. American Legion members,
who are also eligible to join the S.A.L. can become dual-
members, once they join a S.A.L. squadron (See Eligibility
Requirements Below).
What Is Our Mission?
Their main mission is to sponsor programs that its parent
organization, The American Legion, does to improve veterans
communities, such as scholarships, veterans help programs
(i.e. ending veterans homelessness), and youth sports. They
also promote national security, patriotism, and devotion to
veterans. Our Squadron 490, participates in fund raising
events, provides manpower and other support to veteran
outreach programs. Specifically we contribute funds and
manpower to various activities including events where disabled
Veterans are brought to our post for various activities. We also
support our parent American Legion Post 490, by aiding in
these events and activities, Including Air Show viewing from the
post, cook-offs, golf tournaments, and helping to support other
events throughout the year.
